Apple’s iPad was the first to become a mainstream consumer product although it was not the first tablet to hit the market. Apple’s success with the iPad which three million sold in the first 80 days a factor led to numerous competing devices. So far, Apple main competitor is Samsung’s Galaxy Tab currently doing well in European markets. There is also a promising rival is on the horizon in the shape of the BlackBerry PlayBook and Motorola Xoom tablet due for launch later this year. Due for release in early this year, the PlayBook is smaller than the iPad - 7" compared with the iPad’s 9.7" - and, in demo videos, looks fast and slick.

However, since very few people have had their hands in one, it’s difficult to know how it will perform in normal use.Furthermore, by the time it launches it might be in competition not with the 2010 iPad but with the iPad 2 - an upgraded version that Apple is rumoured to be planning to release some time around Easter. There’s good reason to assume that the rumours are correct with Apple having updated its iPhone every year since launch and releases upgraded iPods every year. A new iPad will probably feature a better display, at least one camera and perhaps a faster processor.

One thing that it’s unlikely to be is smaller. Apple is convinced that a 7" tablet is not big enough. Whatever form the iPad 2 takes, it’s certain that tablet computing will continue to grow this year and offer varieties to consumers. As a developer it would be nice to see if you can have connectivity for a standard blackberry and tether to the playbook, combine with solid apps for work and kindle store access and you get a handy gadget for when the full function laptop is not needed. It will be an uphill struggle for the Playbook, even if it is perfect, and has a good battery life; but because developers and business have already created such a phenomenal library of Apps for the iPad.
